Book Review #5 AN EMBER IN THE ASHES by Saabia Tahir

Another book that wasn’t on my list for this summer but I saw mentioned in a few places and just had to read it. YA epic fantasy set in a world where life is simple with no technological advancement. It is written from two viewpoints: Laia is a Scholar, one of thousands, who have been enslaved by the Empire and the elite fighters the Masks.

When her brother is taken by the Empire Laia is forced to help the Resistance in order to save him.

The other main character is Elias: A Mask just days from graduating. He has grown up within Blackcliff Academy, trained to be a ruthless killer for the Empire.

Eventually, Elias and Laia’s paths cross and they find their destinies intertwined. How much are they willing to pay for freedom?

This is another book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The different points of view are split between different chapters so it is not confusing, the characters are believable and their interactions realistic (no instant undeniable love). There is some magic involved, but it’s not everyone and not generally believed in by the characters.

It’s the first in a series and I believe is being made into a film. I had a look on ‘Good Reads‘ and there is a second book coming, but no release date. I look forward to finding out what is in store for the characters There were some very clever elements within the story trapping people on a certain path that they would not have chosen that I must see how it is resolved.

Here are a couple of my favourite quotes:

Life is made of so many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after.

You are an ember in the ashes… You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it.

5 stars from me *****
