Book Review #4 DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE by Laini Taylor

I have seen this book recommended in a few places so I decided to go ahead and buy it.

*** Warning, may contain some spoilers***

It starts with the main character Karou and her life in Prague. Written in the third person limited you get to hear some of her thoughts. Laini Taylor creates a fascinating world that runs alongside our world, full of magic, angels and chimera (mythical creatures) but there are portals to our world. Without giving too much away, Karou can pass through these portals but has limited knowledge of the world on the other side.

After strange handprints are found burnt into the doors, Karou’s life is suddenly turned upside down.

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she’s a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in ‘Elsewhere’, she has never understood Brimstone’s dark work – buying teeth from hunters and murderers – nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn’t whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

It is a well written book that flows beautifully and captivates the imagination. Even if you are not keen on the ‘angel and demon’ genre of books I would still recommend this to you. Karou as a character is strong and believable with her insecurities but also her many talents and skills she has acquired over the years. I love the voice used throughout the book by Laini Taylor, it creates a realness around Karou as a character.

When it came to the romance plot I did find this harder to swallow – but then, any story where they fall immediately and inseparably in love grates a little with me. Not so much that I couldn’t continue reading and enjoying the novel though.
Does anyone else who has read this feel the same?

I will definitely be reading the next two in the series but will have to wait to buy them after my book buying splurge of late.

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE gets 5 stars from me *****

I feel like all my reviews are generous in my star rating so far but they are genuinely good books!
