What a clever idea for a novel! Based on historical works ‘The Annals of Ulster’ a thoroughly enjoyable YA fantasy novel. Those of you who know me know that I love YA, and especially fantasy, so this book is definitely up my street.
MAGONIA is the debut YA novel from Maria written in first person narrative from the main character Aza. Aza is a teenage girl approaching her 16th birthday who has been suffering from a lung disease unique to her from an early age.
She is struggling to breath our air.
Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.
Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In MAGONIA, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power- and as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. In Aza’s hands lies the whole of humanity- including the boy who loves her.
Where do her loyalties lie?
Aza finds out where she belongs: In the world of Magonia, far above the clouds with incredible creatures, shape shifters, pirates and beauty. Maria’s world building is brilliant, she includes social classes and governments in her floating world that add depth and conflict. I look forward to seeing how it plays out in the next in the series (released early 2016).
Aza’s conflict of emotions and loyalty between the world she knew and her new existence is heart felt, a teenager’s irrational response, fiery temper, confusion, longing to do the right thing.
I’m really struggling not to give it all away and spoil the read.
As you can probably tell, I really enjoyed it and read it within 24 hours.
It gets 5 stars ***** which means I will definitely read more from Maria Dahvana Headley and recommend it to you all to read.
